Not for Vegetarians

January 28th, 2010

So for John’s Christmas present I got us tickets to a pig butchering class in New York and a fantastic little place called The Meat Hook.  I thought “weirdest Christmas present ever?”  Except there were ten other girls there that bought the class for their boyfriends/husbands for Christmas or birthday.  It actually really fun and informative.  I think its good to know where your food comes from, plus if ever presented with a whole pig, we could probably handle it now.   We also got to eat a bunch of their specialty house made sausages  and pork chops that were basically just cut out of the animal your looking at (which by the way, were awesome).  Plus the three butchers were hilarious. AND we got to take home a very expensive steak and  a whole bunch of sausages for free.  Anyway, here are photos.

If get grossed out in China Town walking by butcher shops in the Italian Market, Don’t look.

Birthday Doughnuts

January 21st, 2010

John really likes bacon. Like more than most people.

So I made maple-bacon-doughnuts for his birthday.  Here they are.

I, apparently,  get better morning light in my kitchen than I thought.

Macaron Experiment

January 21st, 2010

I have a backlog of stuff I want to post, most of which relating to food.

Around Christmas I was trying my hardest to make the perfect french macaron.  Of course perfect to me means it looks good enough to put in a magazine, not just tastes good. So, I ended up with three batches, the first two from one recipe (tartelette) and the third from another  (david leibovitz). Of course third time was the charm and I promptly packaged them up to give to John’s parents and our neighbors and never took photos of the final product. Oh well, you can see them right out of the oven. They were so tiny and cute.

1 and 2 were too big, mostly because the batter was too runny, so I switched recipes.
